Maternal and Child Healthcare Project

From its inception, BFAS well realizes that adoptive placement program alone cannot address the deep rooted problems of children in Ethiopia where there are an estimated 4 million orphan and 5 million children living under extreme hardship. Building upon its adoption program, BFAS plans to implement integrated humanitarian aid programs in Ethiopia that will address the dire needs of vulnerable orphaned children and young women/girls who are at risk, in a more sustainable manner. Our Maternal and child Health project is designed to implement preventive and curative healthcare services for young women and children, as a major part of its humanitarian aid program.

BFAS has signed Memorandum Of Understanding with the Oromia Health Bureau to undertake Maternal and Child Health projects in the Nakamte, Nedjo, and Asella Zones of the Oromia Regional National State. Our mission is to: reduce and  prevent maternal and child morbidity by building the capacity of health institutions in Oromia so they can provide preventive and curative health services to 3,000 children and mothers in Nakamte, Nedjo and Asella towns/Zones of Oromia Regional State by 2012. The purpose of this project is to improve maternal and child health through promoting healthcare services in Oromia by mobilizing American health volunteers for sharing of resources and expertise towards our health care initiative at the selected sites. The project will work to make services available to vulnerable mothers and children residing in Nakamte, Nedjo and Asella zonal kebele/district areas of the Oromia Regional State. The project will work with physicians who have adopted children from Ethiopia and are interested in supporting healthcare in Ethiopia by coordinate their united effort in providing technical, professional, and in-kind support, By raising and distributing medical supplies and equipment and by coordinating and facilitating trainings and outreach workshops in the selected sites.  The voluntary medical professionals will provide preventive and curative healthcare services including and not limited to: Maternal and Child Health, Medical and Surgical Care Health and Moral Education, On the Job Training for Health Professionals and training of traditional birth attendants, Soliciting and Providing Medical Equipment and Supplies for partnering hospitals.

During the first three years the project will work with the Nedjo Hospital, Wollega University Referral Hospital in Nakemte, and Asella Hospital to provide such health care services at these three selected sites.  For more information, or to participate, please contact our office at info@betterfutureadoption.org.
