With much joy, we are thrilled to announce the adoptions of our two daughters, Sera and Bedo from Gambella, Ethiopia! We traveled to Ethiopia the first week in November 2008, and after a very stressful month of up and down court processes and delays, we finally returned home in December 2008. We are deeply grateful for BFAS’s investment into the lives of our girls and our family. We are deeply aware of how instrumental Agitu and her staff were in bringing this complicated adoption about, and together we are all awed by God’s answer to bringing our girls home!

We Met Agitu and BFAS via an email plea for help in our adoption process. Agitu and BFAS were diligent as the process became increasingly complicated and difficult. The circumstances and orchestration of people and events truly were miraculous. Simply said, and this isn’t an overstatement, our girls’ adoptions were miracles.

This is just the beginning of our adoption story. We have a strong passion for the people of Gambella and desire to stay involved in ministry there. Our lives have been deeply impacted forever. We want to make our lives count for more, and our hope is that one day the girls may be able to go back with us and help their people as well.”

One year ago today, Nami and I walked into a tiny room in an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and met a frightened, little baby girl named Elroi Adonai ElShaddai. We nervously tried to talk to her and touch her hair as she frowned very strongly at us and continued holding on to the nun from the orphanage.

When they finally placed her in my arms, she just wailed and cried, as did I in that moment. What a day that was! What a day I will never forget! In the adoption world, this day is known as the “gotcha day.” And, today is that day!

Over the last year, we have seen a fair share of trials, yet I continually praise and thank my Father for His goodness and love toward us. My desire for this coming year in my own life is to learn and practice true contentment no matter what my circumstances. I look at my daughter and I see her spirit so strong, so forgiving, so hopeful. Her latest phrase to me while she is looking widely into my eyes is, “You MY mommy.” “Yes, Ellie. I’m YOUR mommy. That’s right. I’ll always be your mommy.” Then she replies, “Yes, you Ellie’s mommy fo-EVUH!”

A warm and love-filled THANK YOU to all of you who helped to make this adoption a reality by the grace of our Lord Jesus. By your prayers, your encouragement, and your giving, you are an important part of her life and her calling. Blessings to you always!

We heard of Better Future Adoption Services (BFAS) from our home study agency, HOPE Adoption & Family Services. We were planning on a China adoption, but the time to referral kept getting longer and longer. The time frames quoted by BFAS seemed almost too good to be true so we went to an informational session at their office. We asked candid questions and received very honest answers. We therefore chose to apply and submit our dossier to adopt an Ethiopian infant girl.

We made the decision to adopt through BFAS despite the fact that we were one of the first families to do so. We felt that Agitu (BFAS’s Executive Director) had a passion for these children in her country and that her experience with the Ethiopian adoption program at Children’s Home in Minneapolis made her agency credible.

We kept in contact with Agitu while she was in Addis Ababa and she was able to send us pictures of some waiting children. She sent the one of Arganne on May 10 2007 and we knew she was meant to be ours. We were also sent a photograph of Agitu with Arganne. It was very special that she was able to hold our child and provide first-hand information!

When it was time to travel, interestingly, Agitu was on the same flight to Addis from Minneapolis. It was nice to have her to travel with and made us very comfortable on arrival into Ethiopia. Upon our arrival at the guesthouse, we were greeted by the staff and after what seemed like forever, they brought Arganne to us.

On Monday, we had a “ceremony” where the people involved in getting Arganne to us were present for lunch and traditional coffee ceremony. Upon our return to the United States, we were greeted by both our US family and our new Ethiopian family, the BFAS staff at the airport.
